Developed in direct response to the real security threats being placed on the United States by transnational terrorist groups around the world, the Bachelor of Criminal Justice (BCJ) in Homeland Security and Terrorism program provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to build an awareness of security challenges in the context of today’s evolving operating environment. Offering the chance to plan for real-world situations from a first responder’s point of view, the program strives to develop the professional skills sets necessary for success in homeland security for the 21st century. Within the four-year degree program, students will take coursework honed to their career interests, participate in criminology research, complete a capstone internship in a government agency, and join the on-campus Global Affairs Organization (GAO) to meet with field recruiters.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Government and National Security

Available with a concentration in Intelligence and Security Studies or Politics and Government, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Government and National Security program is delivered to help meet the demanding needs of governing agencies to recruit well-educated professionals to address the multitude of security challenges in the coming years. The program is strongly focused on preparing young people for serving across our homeland at the local, state, and federal government levels as diplomats, military officers, or intelligence analysts. Drawing on a strong curriculum that discusses the six major instruments of national power, the program prides itself on having a real-world curriculum that provides experience in completing written and oral briefings on real security situations. All graduates will possess the skills needed to analyze and devise solutions for overcoming problems in national security at home and abroad.

Department of Public Service Technology

Since being initially founded in 1870 as Buchtel College, the University of Akron has grown considerably to become a leading public research institution on the forefront of higher education with a vibrant 218-acre urban campus in Akron within just 30 miles south of Cleveland in northeastern Ohio. Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Emergency Management and Homeland Security

As one of only a handful of bachelor’s degrees in the United States to be endorsed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Emergency Management and Homeland Security program is designed to prepare undergraduate students to enter or advance in the field of emergency management through the acquisition of specialized skills in disaster planning, preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery. As an upper-division program beginning in the third year after a minimum of 48 hours, the degree requires the successful completion of at least 64 semester hours in subjects related to fire protection, environmental health, public safety, criminal justice, community services, and emergency management. In the final semester, students receive hands-on experience by completing an internship in county emergency management agencies in Akron.

Emergency Management and Homeland Security Certificate

Consisting of 21 hours of specialized courses, the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Certificate is designed to enhance students’ understanding of risk from environmental and/or technological hazards to properly prepare for the occurrence of disasters. Whether planning a career in government, business, or industry, the certificate is useful for building the skills that are essential for effectively managing disasters in both the public and private sector to prevent harm. In order to fit the busy schedules of professionals, the certificate is available in various different modes, including distance learning classes at many Ohio community colleges, completely online web classes with convenient 24/7 classroom access from anywhere, and traditional face-to-face instruction in Akron in evenings.

Emergency Management and Homeland Security Minor

For undergraduate students at the University of Akron who are interested in supplementing their coursework with in-demand knowledge in the management of major emergencies, the Emergency Management and Homeland Security Minor is available with the completion of just 18 credits. Students who declare this minor can expect to take courses related to emergency response, emergency preparedness, disaster planning, hazard processes, terrorism, crisis leadership, hazard prevention, disaster relief, and other current topics in emergency management. Recently created in the fall semester of 2012, the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management program is structured to capitalize on the university’s existing academic strengths of engineering and medical technologies to prepare emergency management officials to manage disaster situations on every scale. Due to our nation’s continuous threat of terrorist attacks, the certificate is in high demand for providing the academic background, advanced practical training, organizational skills, and planning abilities to address crisis as it unfolds. Featuring over 30 experienced practitioners teaching a well-orchestrated curriculum, the program guarantees that students will learn the best procedures for dealing with emergencies in the fields of medical, legal, engineering, and law enforcement. The certificate is intended for emergency managers, risk managers, loss control managers, safety managers, security managers, and other leaders serving crisis management teams. Within the 15-credit certificate program, individuals will expand their current knowledge base in the topics of environmental health, epidemiology, emergency management, wastewater treatment, air pollution control, threat assessment, incident response, asset protection, and disaster planning. Terrorism Preparedness Training Courses

As part of the university’s Center for Terrorism Preparedness, there are numerous Terrorism Preparedness Training Courses offered to deliver integrated training to professionals who are involved in assisting communities for the prevention of, preparation for, response to, and recovery from terrorist attacks or similar natural disasters. Taught by experts in the emergency management field, the training courses are designed to meet the evolving needs of safety personnel, security officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, medical professionals, school leaders, and law enforcement officers in regards to the growing national security threats from terrorist groups. Not only are the training courses offered for continuing education credits at the University of Findlay, but also at partnering locations around America. Students can choose from training courses in community vulnerability assessment, threat assessment management, anti-terrorism protection plan, workplace violence, and prevention of school violence.
