Emergency Management Programs at Adelphi University

Adelphi University introduced new emergency management programs after seeing the effects of the terrorist attacks in New York City on 9/11. Its programs now prepare students for all types of emergency situations, including terrorist threats and natural disaster. A professor working in its College of Nursing and Public Health helped develop these programs after witnessing the effects of 9/11 in person and working in epidemiology fields after those attacks.
The university now offers an Associate of Science in Emergency Management, which is a two-year program. Though students will take a total of 64 credits, they need to take 15 credits from within this major. The university actually offers 15 different courses and allows students to pick which of those they want to take. They can register for courses such as Principles of Emergency Services, Emergency Services Management and Administration, Master for Planning for Public Emergency Management and Introduction to Financial Concepts for Emergency Services. Many graduates will then apply to the university’s bachelor program.
A Bachelor of Science in Emergency Management is available for students who complete the associate program, students who took classes from another college and those who have not yet attended college. It includes 50 credits of courses within this major and a total of 120 credits. Students can transfer credits to the university, but they must complete at least 30 credits at Adelphi University. This online program features eight credits of natural science electives and a number of emergency management courses, including Organizational Behavior, Emergency Management Leadership, and Emergency and Disaster Preparedness. Students will also take two capstone courses to pick a research project topic and then to complete that project.
Students in the university’s Master of Science in Emergency Management program will take 39 credits of courses, but they can transfer credits that they earned in another graduate program into this one. Though the program does not have a thesis requirement, it does feature an Emergency Management Capstone Project and Presentation. Not only will students do a final project, but they will also present their projects in front of the class. Most students do their capstones in their final years after taking classes such as Leadership and Innovation in Complex Systems, Research in Emergency and Disaster Management, Emergency Management Law and Business Continuity Planning.
Adelphi introduced a certificate program in emergency management for students in other majors who want to study this field. It includes five required courses and one elective. The electives that students can choose from include Securing the Homeland, Public Policy and Administration in Emergency Management, Special Needs of Vulnerable Groups During Disasters and Epidemic and Pandemic Planning and Response.
About Adelphi University
Adelphi University is a private university not affiliated with any church or religious organization. Founded in 1863 as the Adelphi Academy, it moved from Brooklyn to Clinton Hill and received a charter from the city in 1869. During the 1890s, a local man saw the need for a full college in Brooklyn and worked with the state to get the charter that allowed the academy to become Adelphi College. Adelphi would later become a separate institution and breakaway from the academy, which would eventually close. It also operated as a women-only college until becoming coeducational to meet the needs of male soldiers after World War II. Adelphi is now a full university that offers associate, bachelor, master, doctoral and certificate programs. It has an enrollment of more than 7,000 students and ranked as the best university in the northeast region in 2010, according to The Princeton Review.
Adelphi University Accreditation Details
Though Adelphi does not have accreditation for its emergency management programs, it did seek regional accreditation to show incoming and returning students that it looks out for their best interests. That accreditation comes from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and gives the university the chance to set degree requirements that include general education courses. It also allows Adelphi to create financial aid packages for students in need.
Adelphi University Application Requirements
Students applying to Adelphi University must meet the requirements of each individual program, which will change between levels. Associate programs require an application and a $40 fee. Students should also submit high school transcripts or proof that they have a GED. The university asks for a personal essay to determine if the student has writing skills on par with the average college student. Anyone applying to a bachelor’s program must meet these same application requirements.
Prospective graduate students must have an undergrad GPA of 2.7 or higher and a degree from a school that has full accreditation. The university will accept students who did not study emergency management into the graduate program, but it asks that students have some business or management experience. Those students will pay the $50 application fee and submit the university’s application. They will also submit an official resume, two letters of recommendation, their official transcripts, and a personal statement. This statement must be no longer than 500 words and show why the student wants to study emergency management online. As the emergency management certificate is a post-graduate program, the university asks that applicants meet these same requirements.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Students in any undergrad program will pay the university $17,715 and fees of $840 each semester. If they enroll on a part-time basis, they pay $1,080 per credit hour and the same fees every semester. Both the certificate and graduate programs in emergency management are available from the university’s College of Professional and Continuing Studies. These students pay $985 per credit hour per class. They also pay fees of $310 per semester as a part-time student and $460 per semester as a full-time student.
Adelphi University understands that different types of students need different aid, which is why it will not design a financial aid package until it receives a student’s completed application packet and his or her FAFSA. Financial aid packages from the university often include federal loans and grants that come from the state and/or federal government. Students of all ages can apply for federal loans too, which are subsidized at the undergrad level and subsidized at the graduate level. Adelphi University offers both merit-based grants and scholarships to help students pay for its emergency management programs too.
