Emergency Management Programs Available at Crown College

Crown College is home to the Emergency Medical Training Institute, which is a joint institute operated by the college and the Ridgeview Medical Center. Students work with trained instructors as they take courses to learn about CPR and other rescue methods. The institute also offers refresher courses for those who currently work in the field. Some of the classes that are available from this division include Heartsaver First Aid, Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Emergency Medical Responder.
Many of the students enrolled in the college’s emergency management programs will take classes at the institute too. The college offers an online Bachelor of Science in Disaster and Emergency Management that allows students to get their undergrad degrees before they enroll in the college’s graduate program. Undergrads will take up to 21 credits of course that make up the college’s Christian core and 31 credits of general education classes. They also take 43 credits of electives and 36 credits of required classes, including Emergency Relief and Community Development, Emergency Preparedness and Planning, Management Principles and Crisis and Risk Communication.
Students who have a bachelor’s degree and want to learn more about emergency management can get a certificate through the college. The certificate program includes two required classes: Disaster Management Leadership and Planning and Disaster Management Applied Practicum. In the practicum, students gain fieldwork experience and have the chance to work with government agencies. They also pick two classes from five electives. While Public Policy for Emergency Management looks at the policies that professionals in this field follow, Hazards Mitigation looks at how professionals handle hazardous materials. Other available classes include Emergency Operation Management, Community Emergency Preparedness, and Disaster Relief and Redevelopment.
Also available is a post-graduate certificate program in emergency management. It includes a practicum that allows students to work with Crown College as they decide where to do their fieldwork. They will then take one required class and two electives. These courses allow students to study leadership in the field of disaster management, how disaster situations affect those who live in the community and the principles needed in emergency management.
About Crown College
Crown College is a private college affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Established in 1916 with a small campus in St. Paul, the college opened as the Alliance Training Home. Though it became the St. Paul Training School of the Christian Missionary Alliance a few years later, it continued offering programs for those who wanted to do missionary work through their churches. Even after becoming the St. Paul Bible Institute and the St. Paul Bible College, the school remained in St. Paul. It wasn’t until the late 1960s that work began on a new campus in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota. The college would move to that campus in 1970 and become Crown College in the early 1990s.
As Crown College, it now offers full degree programs. Crown remains focused on the religious needs of its student body and encourages students to attend church services weekly. The Friends School of Minnesota took over a portion of the old campus, while the new campus features modern buildings and amenities for students. Crown offers more than 20 degree programs through the Graduate School and School of Online Studies. Both of those divisions offer online programs and include some certificate tracks for new students. Though enrollment at the college includes more than 1,300 students, a few hundred of those students sign up for online programs. Crown College offers internships and other offline resources and opportunities for its online students.
Crown College Accreditation Details
As there isn’t an organization responsible for accrediting emergency management programs, those programs do not have specialty accreditation. The programs do have accreditation through the regional accreditation granted to the college by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). This is also why Crown students can apply for financial aid with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and transfer any of their college credits. Crown also has accreditation from the Association for Biblical Higher Education Commission on Accreditation (ABHECA).
Crown College Application Requirements
Crown offers the emergency management program for students who already have a bachelor’s degree. They need to submit transcripts to show that they have their degrees. The college requires that students take at least 12 credits of classes from Crown to complete their certificates. If students want to enroll in a graduate program later, they will need to apply to that program. The college has the same requirements for students applying to the post-graduate certificate program.
Undergrads applying to Crown College need to meet the same requirements whether they want to study online or on the campus. Incoming students can use the college’s website to find the academic counselors who oversee their states. Those counselors help students apply to degree and certificate programs and ensure that they meet the minimum admissions requirements. Crown asks for official high school transcripts that come in a sealed envelope, ACT/SAT/CLT scores, a completed application, and a spiritual life essay. In this essay, students will write about their beliefs and how those beliefs shaped them as individuals. Crown asks students to upload the essay into the application before they submit it.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At Crown College, undergrads in the emergency management program pay $460 per credit hour. They also pay an application fee of $25 and a technology fee of $35 that is due at the beginning of each semester. Students in the emergency management certificate programs qualify as graduate students and pay $540 per credit hour.
Students who need financial aid must first get accepted by the college. They will then complete the FAFSA before the semester starts and make sure that they use the Crown College code. Crown will process the document and send students a link to check their Student Aid Reports (SAR), which shows the aid given to them. The Pell grant goes to undergrads who demonstrate financial need. Undergrads may qualify for a Minnesota grant of up to $10,000 a year or a pastoral grant of up to $18,000 a year. Other scholarships and grants are available for students in the military and then referred to the college by alumni. Crown College also allows students in any of its emergency management programs to use private and government student loans.
