Students who want to work in emergency management fields will find that Florida State College at Jacksonville offers a number of programs for them. The largest of those programs is one that awards graduates an Associate of Science in Emergency Administration and Management. It includes 60 credits of work and allows those with no college experience to graduate in 24 months. Students who bring credits with them can finish the program in 18 months. The program features 45 credits of emergency management courses, including Risk Analysis, Disaster Victims, Introduction to Emergency Administration and Management and Disaster Policy and Law.
An Associate of Science in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is also available from the college. Designed for those who want to work as paramedics, it teaches students how to resolve emergency medical situations in the form. Majors must receive scores of C or higher in all the required classes they take. Those classes are worth 50 credits and include EMT Skills Lab 4 and Paramedic Lab I and II. Majors will also take labs that show them how to respond to different types of medical situations. The program requires that students take other classes too, including Principles of Management, Emergency Medical Services Education and Management of Emergency Medical Services.
Florida State College at Jacksonville also offers a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Management and a Technical Certificate in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. The bachelor’s program includes a capstone that lets students show the emergency and public safety management skills they learned. It also includes courses such as Contemporary Trends and Issues in Corrections and Patrol Issues in Law Enforcement Administration. Florida State College at Jacksonville is a state college in Jacksonville, Florida. Established in 1966, it opened as Florida Junior College. As a junior college, it offered two-year degree programs and options for students who wanted to transfer to other schools in Florida and neighboring states. The popularity of community colleges grew in the 1970s and 1980s, which led to the college becoming Florida Community College at Jacksonville (FCCJ). It kept this name from 1986 through 2009. Once it joined the Florida Community College System, the college became Florida State College at Jacksonville or FCSJ. This also led to the college introducing its first bachelor’s degree programs.
Though FSCJ still offers traditional two-year associate programs, it now offers four-year programs too. Students have the choice between earning their bachelor’s degrees from the college or moving to another school to complete their education. The largest campus in the system is the Downtown Jacksonville campus, which is close to Springfield. This campus is home to most of the college’s departments and has a convenient location near several major highways and roads. The college also has both a north and a south campus and one in Kent. There are also a number of classes and programs that students can take and complete online. Florida State College at Jacksonville Accreditation Details
As FSCJ has regional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and that organization’s Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), it can offer financial aid packages to new and continuing students. This accreditation is also why the state college can accept credits from students who previously attended another school. Florida State College at Jacksonville Application Requirements
FSCJ stopped using paper applications because it found that students made mistakes on those forms. It now offers online applications and asks that students pick one based on whether they want to apply to an associate or a bachelor’s program. There is a separate application for students seeking certificates too. Students will create online accounts, which they can also use to apply for scholarships and to view the final decision made by the college. Students who graduated from a high school in the county or a neighboring county will enter that information on their applications. The college will then request their transcripts. All other students must request that their high schools submit their transcripts to the college.
An online residency form is available for students who qualify for in-state tuition. As soon as the college processes this form, it will notify the student. Students can also submit their standardized test scores. Those with a low score and those who took the test more than two years in the past must take assessment exams from the college. They can schedule those exams online and take the tests on the FSCJ campus. The college also asks that students use the site to sign up for an orientation session.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Florida residents attending FSCJ pay $105 per credit hour for all of their courses, including any online classes they might take. Nonresidents pay $402 per credit hour for the classes they take on the Jacksonville campus, but those students can take online classes for only $219 per credit hour. The college has a special program that allows Georgia students to qualify for a discount. This brings their rate down to $219 per credit hour for any classes they take on the college’s campus. All stunts also pay fees of around $300 to $450 for each course.
With financial aid, FSCJ can bring down some of their costs. To get that aid, they need to use the college’s code when filling out the FAFSA. The college encourages students to use this form as soon as possible after the beginning of October. Grants and loans are among the aid that goes to students, though some will also qualify for work-study. The final deadline for students seeking scholarships is August first, though the college recommends that students apply for scholarships by the beginning of May.
