The emergency management programs offered by Millersville University prepare students for working in careers as emergency planning managers, disaster response technicians, and operations coordinators. All emergency management majors can join the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM) too. This club offers exercises that help students see what steps they should take during an emergency and meet and greet events with professionals working in the field. Millersville University offers a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Hazards and Emergency Management program for undergrads. It includes a set of core classes in environmental hazards and a second set of core classes in emergency management. Each core is worth a total of 18 credits. The classes they take include Introduction to Occupational Safety, Disaster Management and Community Risk Assessment, Physical Geology, Global Change and Introduction to Terrorism, WMO and Homeland Security. Millersville also requires that students either do an independent study project or an emergency management internship. Either one will count as the student’s capstone.
Students who have a bachelor’s degree in emergency management or a related field can earn a certificate in emergency and disaster management too. Designed to help students learn more about management, it features half as many courses as the full degree program does. To earn a Master of Science in Emergency Management (MSEM), which is offered online students must take 30 credits of classes. Those courses include Social Dimensions of Disaster, Emergency Management Planning, Principles and Practices of Emergency Management and Disaster Response and Long-Term Recovery. Graduate students must do at least one emergency management practicum. Millersville University offers an emergency management concentration in its Master of Social Work (MSW) program also.

Founded in 1855, Millersville University opened as the Lancaster County Normal School, which offered educational training programs. It became the Millersville State Normal School a few years later and then Millersville State College to coincide with its transition from a normal school to a full college. Millersville University Accreditation Details
Millersville University designed its emergency management programs to prepare students for working as managers and coordinators. Though the programs do not have official accreditation, they do meet the basic standards for those working in this field. The university has accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), which is why Millersville can grant degrees and set graduation requirements. This accreditation also allows Millersville to offer financial aid that includes both institutional and government aid. The nursing and social work programs offered by the university are just a few of the programs that have accreditation.
Millersville University Application Requirements
Undergrads living in either York or Lancaster County can apply to the university without providing their test scores. Students from outside of those counties must submit either an SAT or ACT score in addition to the application and all other required information. The average undergrad accepted by the university has a GPA of 3.4 and a score of 1080/22 on the SAT/ACT. Millersville requires both a completed application and a personal statement. Students can write about why they picked Millersville, what they want to do with their degrees and what they hope to do in college. The university also allows students to submit letters of recommendation but does not require those letters from undergrads.
Students applying to either the certificate or the graduate degree program in emergency management must meet the same requirements, including filling out the university’s online application and paying a $40 application fee. The application includes two sections that ask students to upload additional information. One section asks for a professional goals statement, and the other asks for a letter of recommendation. Students need to submit three letters of recommendation and can either use the application system or submit their letters through the mail. Millersville will not accept letters written by people related to the applicant. Other requirements include a GPA of 2.8 or higher and official transcripts. Those with a GPA below 2.8 will also need to submit a MAT or GRE score.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Graduate students attending Millersville University who are Pennsylvania residents will pay $679 per credit hour, which includes the university’s technology and other fees. If the student is not from Pennsylvania, he or she will pay $957 per credit hour. Millersville offers both full-time and part-time assistantships for emergency management graduate students. Full-time jobs cover the cost of taking up to 24 credit hours of classes, while part-time positions pay for 12 credit hours of classes. All programs include a stipend too. Grad students will need to apply for one of these positions, but they can use the funds they get from an assistantship with the loans they get through the FAFSA.
The cost of attendance for undergrads ranges from $3,948 to $4,935 per credit hour for Pennsylvania residents based on whether they take 12 or 15 credits of classes each semester. They also pay fees of more than $1,300 a semester. Undergrads who are not from Pennsylvania pay a nonresident rate of $9,934 and fees of around $1,400 every semester. Students who want to live on the Millersville campus will also pay for room and board each semester. Undergrads can qualify for both institutional and university aid as well as government aid.
