Ohio Christian University offers a wide range of opportunities for emergency and disaster management majors. It’s home to an Office of Emergency Management that is responsible for helping the campus and students during emergency situations. Majors can work for this office while in school to gain some real-life experience. They can also check out the calendar maintained by that office to see upcoming special events. The university offers seminars for those who want to learn more about related topics. They can also participate in mock situations and take CPR and other first-aid classes.
The university’s emergency and disaster management program ranks as the third best online program of its type. It teaches students how to follow the emergency management cycle, which includes taking steps to prevent those situations, preparing for emergencies, responding to those situations and helping others recover later. Students often participate in mock emergency crisis events. Those simulations show them what can happen during an emergency and the ways in which they can respond to help others. Though students take 120 credits of courses, some of those credits include classes from other departments. The university expects them to take theology, literature and other general education courses.
To earn a Bachelor of Arts in Emergency Management and Disaster, students must take 36 credits within the major. Those classes include Politics and Policy in Emergency Management, Terrorism in Emergency Management and Recovery and Mitigation. Some of the related electives they can take include Grant Writing in Emergency Management, Managing Emergency Response Operations and Social Issues in Emergency and Disaster Management. The university allows students to combine an emergency and disaster management degree with a business degree. Those students will need to take classes such as Accounting for Management, Principles of Finance, Introduction to Business and Principles of Management and Leadership. Students can also gain credit from study programs in Washington DC and study abroad programs.
About Ohio Christian University
Ohio Christian University is an Ohio university that allows students to attend college in a religious setting. Established in 1948, it opened as the Mount of Praise Bible College. The Churches of Christ in the United Union had a campground that they used for their annual meetings. They allowed the college to use that campground for students. An affiliation between that church and the university still exists today. In honor of Circleville, Ohio, which is where its campus is, the college named itself Circleville Bible College in later years. Though the college kept that name for several decades, it became Ohio Christian University in 2006. The university now uses both that name and OCU.
The OCU campus is home to two residence halls for freshmen. It separates students by gender and allows them to attend worship services and other events to make new friends. Two other residence halls are open to older students, but those upperclassmen can also live in buildings and townhouses owned by the university off campus. To help students of all types, the university offers both Associate of Arts and Bachelor of Arts programs as well as some Master of Arts options. Students can also enroll in programs designed for those going back to school and other adult learners. OCU has an enrollment of 600 online students and more than 2,300 students studying on its Circleville and satellite campuses.
Ohio Christian University Accreditation Details
OCU has religious accreditation that lets students know that they can use their faith in school. That accreditation comes from the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) and its Commission on Accreditation. To meet the needs of students who want financial aid, the university also has accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). This provides OCU with the regional accreditation that it needs to offer financial aid packages. It also lets students transfer credits between two or more schools.
Ohio Christian University Application Requirements
Any student who wants to take classes on the OCU campus must submit its residential application. There is a separate application designed for online students. Residential students must have a grade point average of at least 2.0 and score 19 or higher on the ACT. The university will accept an equivalent score from the SAT. Home school students have the option of providing a score from an official placement test instead. To apply, students submit the online application, which does not charge any fee, and provide an official transcript and some type of test score.
OCU gives priority to students who followed the college prep curriculum established by the Ohio Department of Education. This includes four years of introduction and advanced English courses and at least two years of a foreign language. Students should also take math, science and social studies courses in high school. Any student who wants to return to the university the next year must submit a new application. The university reserves the right to deny acceptance to students who violate its regulations and standards and those who cannot keep up with their studies.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The average price that students pay to attend OCU after receiving financial aid is $15,000 a year. Their total amount includes tuition of $21,390 per year and room and board of $8,320 annually. Those who take 11 or fewer credits pay a rate of $913 per credit hour. Any student who takes more than 18 credits will pay the university $690 for each additional credit. OCU offers discounts for summer students that allow them to take classes during that session for $353 per credit hour. The university requires that students put down a tuition deposit after receiving their acceptance letters.
Though students can get loans and grants from the government and qualify for the federal work-study program through the FAFSA, OCU recommends that students look at some of its scholarships too. Its presidential scholarship awards students up to $8,000 a year, while a merit scholarship provides students with $3,000 a year. Those who qualify for more than one scholarship can stack those funds together to further reduce their costs. Discounts are available for students who graduated from a high school is a surrounding county and for those who were in the military.
