Emergency Management Degrees at Upper Iowa University

Students have four options for studying emergency management at Upper Iowa University. Available programs include undergraduate and graduate degrees in emergency disaster management and two certificates. Students may also enroll in the Emergency and Disaster Management minor. The university offers several choices for the location of study with select education centers and online study available.
Students who enroll in the university’s emergency and disaster management programs will be introduced to the theory and practice of mitigating natural, civil, technological, and human-caused hazards. Classes a student may take as an undergraduate in emergency management include Principles of Emergency Management, Political & Policy Basis of Emergency Management, Emergency Preparedness and Planning, and Disaster Response & Recovery.
Students will enroll in the Master of Public Administration program to study emergency management at the graduate level at Upper Iowa University. The Emergency Management & Homeland Security Emphasis is designed to help prepare students for positions of leadership. Graduates will learn about how to provide strategic leadership in hazardous conditions, as well as a “whole community” approach to meeting the demands of an emergency event.
Classes a student may take in the graduate program include Terrorism & Politics, Psychology & Culture of Terrorism, and Leadership Issues with Critical Incidents. To complete the program, students must take 36 credits as approved by the department. Conveniently, all courses for this program are offered online.
Students who don’t want to enroll in a complete bachelor’s degree or graduate degree program can choose the Emergency and Disaster Management Undergraduate Certificate or the Master of Public Administration (MPA) Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management & Homeland Security. Students must apply to the university as a non-degree seeking student to enroll in one of the school’s certificate programs.
For the undergraduate certificate, students don’t need any previous college experience and only need to submit evidence of a high school diploma or GED. Degree-seeking students can also enroll in the undergraduate certificate program with the approval of their academic advisor. The undergraduate certificate requires that students complete 18 credits that include four mandatory classes and one elective.
For the graduate certificate program, students must complete 12 credits and must earn a cumulative 3.0 GPA to receive their certificate. Classes required include Comparative Strategies in National Security, Counter-Terrorism, and Emergency Management: Planning & Response. Students may also participate in an internship while seeking their degree that will require that the student completes at least 320 hours in a public sector or not-for-profit agency.

Upper Iowa University is a private school in the northeast area of the state. Located in the rural town of Fayette, the school has around 6,100 students attending classes at its 100-acre campus, as well as through its distance education programs located throughout the United States. Students can also attend classes for some degrees through online, independent study.

Upper Iowa University Application Requirements
Future students at Upper Iowa University will apply according to their status as an undergraduate, graduate, transfer, online, center, military, veteran, or international student. Applicants can also apply for the university’s self-paced degree programs. For undergraduate students, requirements include a completed application, official transcripts from all schools attended, and standardized test scores. Students who apply online will receive a waiver for the application fee.
Admission decisions are based on factors that include academic performance, test scores, and academic preparation. The university may also consider extracurricular activities and leadership qualities. Students interested in graduate study must have an average of 2.75 for their college GPA or a 3.0 GPA on their most recent 60 semester credits. Students can take the GRE or GMAT when applying and may submit scores from either or both standardized tests.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for students living on campus and attending undergraduate school is $30,810 annually. Part-time students are billed by the credit hour and pay $1,281 per credit. Students will also pay a student fee of $875 each year. Students who want to enroll in the Master of Education program will pay $482 per semester credit hour, and students in the Master of Business Administration program will pay $585 per semester credit hour.
Students may also need to budget additional funds for a meal plan and place in one of the university’s dorm rooms. Meal plans range from $3,677 to $4,696 for on-campus students and between $721 and $1,287 for commuting students. Residence hall costs range from $4,017 to $6,694 per year.
Financial assistance is offered to students at Upper Iowa University who submit their FAFSA form. The university recommends that students submit their form as soon after October 1st as possible. The priority date for FAFSA completion is March 1st. Students may qualify for institutional, state, and federal aid programs, as well as loans, grants, and scholarships from outside, private sources.
